One of Iran’s most senior Shiite clerics has issued a religious death decree, known as a fatwa, against President Trump over comments he made about Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi on Sunday accused Mr. Trump of being guilty of “moharebeh” — a term in Islamic jurisprudence that means “waging war against God.”
“Those who threaten the leadership and integrity of the Islamic Ummah are to be considered warlords,” Mr. Shirazi wrote in his fatwa.
Ummah refers to the entire community of Muslims, bound together by shared religious ties.
Mr. Trump has said he knew where Mr. Khamenei was hiding during the 12-day Israel-Iran conflict, calling him an “easy target” and saying the Iranian leader would be safe “for now.”
The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency characterized the president’s statement as “his customary vile rhetoric.”
“Any form of cooperation or support for such entities by Muslims or Islamic governments is forbidden,” IRNA said.
Mr. Shirazi urged Muslims around the world to take up the fatwa, saying those who “endure hardship or loss in countering them will be deemed mujahid — a fighter in the path of God,” IRNA said.
