A pair of newlyweds from Indiana died along with their two dogs when their single-engine plane crashed just after takeoff at Mason County Airport in Ludington, Michigan.
On Sunday at 10 a.m. local time, the plane crashed into a field, killing Allison Wheaton, 43, Randy Strebig, 60, and the two dogs, the Michigan State Police posted on X.
The flight, headed to Albuquerque, New Mexico, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, took off in less-than-ideal conditions, airport officials said.
“I don’t have the specific weather conditions for when they departed, but it was actively snowing and relatively low visibility,” Mason County Airport Manager John O’Connor told WPBN-TV, a Traverse City NBC affiliate.
The pair were on the board of directors of Maine-based International Seaplane Fly-In and were married in September after 17 years together, the nonprofit said in a post on Facebook.
“Randy and Allison will forever be remembered as selfless community members and talented aviators, passionate about every project and cause they took on. Blue skies and tailwinds to our dear friends,” International Seaplane Fly-In wrote.
The FAA said the cause of the crash was unknown but noted that a fire broke out following the landing. The National Transportation Safety Board began aiding the investigation of the incident Monday, police said.
