An Illinois man who shot himself in the leg while dreaming he was fighting off a robber turned out to have shot himself in the foot in the legal sense as well, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
Mark Dicara, 62, of Lake Barrington in the Chicago suburbs is accused of committing two felonies: owning a gun despite having a revoked Illinois firearm owner’s ID card and shooting his gun recklessly.
On April 10, Mr. Dicara was asleep when he thought he heard someone break into his house. Grabbing his .357 Magnum revolver, he shot at the intruder, still in the dream — only to wake up to find himself suffering a gunshot wound to the leg and the bullet in his bedding.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at the Dicara residence at 9:50 p.m., giving him a tourniquet to stanch the significant bleeding. He was then transported to a hospital.
A warrant would not be put out for Mr. Dicara’s arrest on the revoked ID and reckless discharge charges until Friday. He was arrested, processed and released on bond Monday and is due back in court on June 29.
