Just weeks ahead of his criminal trial on federal gun charges and a month away from a trial on tax charge, Hunter Biden was on the guest list for Thursday night’s White House state dinner for Kenyan President William Ruto.
The president’s son was among hundreds of high-profile guests invited to toast Mr. Ruto and chow down on lobster and braised short ribs. Hunter Biden’s wife, Melissa Cohen, was spotted entering the dinner without him. It was unclear if he arrived earlier or was not attending.
When asked by reporters where her husband was, Ms. Cohen did not answer.
Hunter Biden’s daughter, Finnegan, was also on the guest list.
Also invited was Sara Biden, the wife of President Biden’s brother James, who was involved in Hunter Biden’s overseas business deals.
The guest list appearance comes as Hunter Biden is asking a federal court in Delaware to postpone his trial on gun charges scheduled to start next month in Wilmington.
An attorney for Hunter Biden filed a request on Monday, two weeks before the trial is set to get underway. A three-judge panel already rejected his request to overturn the trial judge’s rejection of several motions to dismiss the case.
Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he purchased a gun while he was using illegal narcotics, including allegations that he falsely submitted a form that he was not using drugs when he bought a revolver in 2018.
In a separate case, Hunter Biden faces federal tax charges. That case is set to go to trial on June 20 in California. He has also pleaded not guilty to those charges.
