A violent inmate remains on the loose after he was mistakenly released last week from the same New Orleans jail where 10 prisoners broke out in May.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said Friday that Khalil Bryan, 30, was let out of the jail due to “human error.”
The sheriff said Bryan was confused with another inmate with the same last name who was scheduled for release.
Authorities said the convicted robber was being held on drug, theft and resisting arrest charges at the Orleans Justice Center when he was set free Friday.
Bryan also had an active warrant for weapons assault, domestic abuse, child endangerment and home invasion charges.
“I want to make a sincere apology to the people of New Orleans,” Sheriff Hutson said during a press conference. “The mistaken release of Khalil Bryan was a serious error, and as sheriff, I take full responsibility.”
New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick urged Bryan to turn himself in, even if he was not aware that he was released unintentionally. Police said they have contacted Bryan’s victims to alert them about him being back in public.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams said charges are not off the table for the deputies who were working at the jail when Bryan was allowed to walk out.
One jail employee was formally charged this month for his role in helping 10 inmates escape the Orleans Justice Center on May 16.
Court documents said Sterling Williams turned off the water in the cell where the prisoners ripped off a toilet, busted a hole through a wall and then climbed the jail yard’s fence. The inmates, almost all of whom were behind bars on violent charges, scattered throughout the city after crossing nearby Interstate 10.
Nine of the inmates have since been recaptured, with Derrick Groves the only one who is now the focus of a sprawling search by federal and state authorities.
Groves, 28, was convicted of murdering two people in a 2018 shooting at the Mardi Gras parade. He had been behind bars since 2019 and was set to be sentenced for the killings when he escaped. Media reports said he is also linked to two other killings.
Prosecutors said Groves was in an on-and-off relationship with a former jail employee, Darriana Burton, at the time of the escape. Ms. Burton was charged with conspiracy to commit simple escape.
