Human body parts were found in the Tualatin River in Oregon on consecutive days last week, with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office treating the investigation as a homicide.

A kayaker found the first body part in the river at 5:09 p.m. Friday, and searchers dispatched by the sheriff’s office found a second part there Saturday, the office said in a release Monday.

“We are treating this as a homicide investigation until we uncover evidence that it’s not,” sheriff spokesman David Huey told Portland’s KGW-TV.

The amount of decomposition observed on the body parts suggests the victim died recently, Mr. Huey said.

The victim was an adult, according to KOIN, another Portland station.

The sheriff’s office didn’t reveal gender or other identifying information. The Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to figure out the cause of death.

“This is really uncommon. Unsettling, concerning are other terms I would use to describe this incident,” Mr. Huey said.
