Four top aides to former President Biden have agreed to provide interviews to House lawmakers investigating a potential cover-up of Mr. Biden’s cognitive decline and the frequent use of an autopen to sign executive orders and pardons during his administration.
Neera Tanden, who served as Mr. Biden’s Domestic Policy Council director as well as his staff secretary, will appear for an interview with House Oversight and Government Reform lawmakers on June 24, a panel aide said. The committee will interview Anthony Bernal, a former assistant to Mr. Biden and a senior advisor to first lady Jill Biden, on June 26.
The two are among a group of aides who, according to anonymous sources in a new tell-all book, acted as a “politburo” by covering up for Mr. Biden’s cognitive difficulties and acting on his behalf as his decline worsened.
Two other top aides reportedly in on the cover-up —Ashley Williams, former special assistant and deputy director of Oval Office operations, and Annie Tomasini, former deputy chief of staff —will provide interviews in July.
The four agreed to appear voluntarily, weeks after Oversight Chairman James Comer, Kentucky Republican, requested interviews.
He subpoenaed former White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who has not agreed to the terms of a voluntary interview about Mr. Biden’s physical and cognitive health while he served as president.
Mr. Biden last week insisted in a statement that he alone made the decisions in the White House.
“Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency,” he said. “I made the decisions about pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false.”
President Trump last week ordered the Justice Department to investigate the Biden administration’s use of the autopen and alleged actions by aides to hide Mr. Biden’s cognitive decline amid reports the former president, 82, was checked out and aides were running the country.
In an order released by the Trump White House, the president called for the Justice Department to investigate “whether certain individuals conspired to deceive the public about Biden’s mental state and unconstitutionally exercise the authorities and responsibilities of the President.”
The watchdog group Oversight Project last week announced an analysis of proclamations, pardons, executive orders and other memoranda signed during the Biden administration using three different mechanical signatures. They found the autopen was used even when Mr. Biden was in the White House.
