Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska predicted an intraparty feud with House Speaker Mike Johnson if the chamber votes on more military assistance for Ukraine.

The moderate Republican said he has secured a “commitment” from Mr. Johnson and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul that some form of legislation with Ukraine money will come to the chamber’s floor, despite hardline conservatives’ threats of ousting Mr. Johnson.

“It’s possible” that Mr. Johnson could lose his speakership, Mr. Bacon said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “I’m not going to deny it. We have one or two people that are not team players. They’d rather enjoy the limelight.”

Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican, could see Democratic support to keep his job, but only if he allows a vote on Ukraine funding.

“It is very likely that after this Ukraine bill, we may have a standoff with the speaker,” Mr. Bacon said. “I hope the speaker prevails. He’s doing the right thing. It’s in our national security interest that Ukraine remain independent.”

Congress could begin considering Ukraine legislation as early as the week of April 8, when lawmakers return from Easter recess.
