Honolulu police said a man stabbed his wife and three children to death before taking his own life inside the family’s Manoa home.
Lt. Deena Thoemmes said the wife and three kids — ages 10, 12 and 17 — were all found with fatal stab wounds inside the home Sunday morning. Police didn’t share a cause of death for the man.
Lt. Thoemmes said the motive for the attack is still under investigation, but she added that “these don’t appear to be random acts.”
Officers first arrived at the home at about 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report from an anonymous caller, but police said they left when no one answered the door.
HPD Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said another witness called the police and provided more information, giving officers enough cause to go inside the home and investigate at about 9:15 a.m.
Police said they found all five victims dead inside.
Police did not identify the deceased. That information is expected to be released by the medical examiner’s office.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a statement that he is “heartbroken by the tragic incident … claiming the lives of an entire family.”
“This inexplicable tragedy has deeply shaken our community,” Mr. Blangiardi said. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends grappling with this profound loss.”
Chief Logan said the incident is the state’s worst mass killing since the Xerox murders in November 1999 when Bryan Koji Uyesugi gunned down seven coworkers, including his supervisor.
