Two hikers in New York who used hallucinogenic mushrooms called 911 for aid after mistakenly thinking the third member of their party had died.

The hallucinating hikers, unnamed in a Wednesday release from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, called the emergency line at about 9 a.m. Saturday to report their friend had died.

When they ran into a Cascade Summit steward, they also said they were lost. The steward figured out that the two hikers were “in an altered mental state,” NYDEC said.

The third member of the hiking party, who was uninjured, ended up calling for aid.

NYDEC Forest Ranger Robert Praczkajlo took the original two hikers to an ambulance and escorted the third hiker back to the party’s campsite.

The three later reunited at the hospital, officials told The Associated Press.
