Los Angeles police said a Hawaiian father died in an apparent suicide while searching for his missing adult daughter, who disappeared during her layover in L.A. earlier this month.
Authorities said Ryan Kobayashi, 58, was found dead around 4 a.m. Sunday in a parking lot at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Police didn’t say how he died, but described his death as an apparent suicide.
Mr. Kobayashi was in Los Angeles to try and find his daughter, 30-year-old Hanna Kobayashi.
“The Kobayashi family endured a devastating tragedy today,” wrote the RAD Movement, a nonprofit helping the family in the search. “After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. This loss has compounded the family’s suffering immeasurably.”
Ms. Kobayashi was on her way to upstate New York to visit family, but her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, said she missed her Nov. 8 connecting flight at LAX.
Ms. Kobayashi decided to go to an event at The Grove in Los Angeles, but Hannah’s aunt and sister said that’s when the missing woman started sending strange texts to family members.
“She mentioned feeling scared, and that someone might be trying to steal her money and identity,” Ms. Pidgeon told Los Angeles TV station KTLA. “Strange, cryptic messages — things about the matrix — it was so unlike her. And then all of a sudden, no more communication.”
Ms. Kobayashi’s family last heard from her Nov. 10, and she was last seen Nov. 11 near the Pico Metro Station downtown.
The RAD Movement said Ms. Kobayashi is still actively missing and they believe she is in danger.
Ms. Koyabashi is 5-foot-10-inches tall, weighs 140 pounds and has brown hair and eyes, and fair skin with freckles.
