NextImg:Harris holds urgent call with donors as pressure builds on Biden to quit race

Vice President Kamala Harris held a hastily organized video call with Democratic donors Friday afternoon as party leaders urge President Biden to quit the presidential race, according to multiple news outlets.

The call was promoted by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a major donor to Democrats, who invited other tech leaders to participate, The New York Times reported.

The Times’ report said Ms. Harris spoke for about five minutes and urged donors to keep supporting the Democratic ticket, but otherwise made no announcements.

“Tell your friends … we are going to win this election,” she said, according to an unnamed participant who spoke with the paper. Another participant termed the call “ludicrous.”

The vice president’s public schedule for Friday listed only unspecified private “briefings” and internal meetings with staff.

Party leaders including top Democrats in Congress have warned Mr. Biden that donors are pulling back since his poor performance in a debate on June 27 against former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

The vice president also is scheduled to headline a big-dollar fundraiser on Saturday in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Ms. Harris is considered the most likely alternative if Mr. Biden does drop out of the race. The president, who has COVID-19, said Friday that he looks forward to returning to the campaign trail next week.

Others who have been urging him to quit the campaign say that he could decide to drop out as soon as this weekend.
