NextImg:Haley says Trump’s plan for more tariffs will inflict economic hardship on U.S. consumers

Nikki Haley is warning that former President Donald Trump‘s plan for new tariffs on foreign goods will push prices higher for American consumers.

Mr Trump has teased the idea of slapping a 10% tariff on most foreign products shipped into the U.S.

“This is a man who now wants to go and put 10% tariffs across the board raising taxes on every single American. Think about that for a second,” Ms. Haley said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

Economists from both parties have warned the Trump tariffs could lead to a dramatic escalation in trade wars with China and other countries.

The Trump campaign has dismissed the concerns as typical fearmongering from the Washington establishment and argued such a move would help strengthen domestic production.

Ms. Haley, however, said Mr. Trump’s economic record is not as stellar as he makes it out to be, reminding voters over and over the national debt grew by $8 trillion on his watch.

“We’ve got to let the American people know that what Donald Trump‘s about to do to you is going to raise every household expense by $2,600 a year,” he said. “They’re going to raise it, they’re going to raise the cost of anything from baby strollers to appliances under Donald Trump. Middle-class families can’t afford that.”
