Georgia authorities said Sunday they are investigating a shooting that left a man wounded and a state trooper injured after officers tried to break up a street race.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said state police took passenger Chester Williams, 41, and driver Tony Ward, 34, into custody following the shootout late Saturday in Rockdale County.
The Georgia State Patrol said they tried to stop two drivers from racing on Interstate 20 around 11:40 p.m. Saturday when one of the drivers pulled into a convenience store parking lot.
Authorities said Mr. Ward first circled the gas pumps in an attempt to lose the cops before Mr. Williams hopped out of the SUV and opened fire on state troopers.
Police said the troopers returned fire and hit Mr. Williams, who was arrested and taken to a hospital.
Mr. Ward fled the area, police said, but was tracked down by deputies from the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office a short time later.
Police said Mr. Williams is being investigated for aggravated assault on an officer, but didn’t share what other charges the two men may be facing.
Authorities also said a state trooper was injured during the incident and was “taken to a hospital for observation.”
The GBI is investigating the police shooting at the request of the state patrol.
