D.C. police said Friday they shot and killed a gunman in Southeast after he opened fire on two officers and left one with a serious injury.
Authorities said the shooting took place shortly before 5 p.m. Friday in the 2800 block of Gainesville Street SE.
Police said officers arrived on the scene for a report of an armed man, whom they identified as 33-year-old Arthur Porter, arguing with two women.
Officers tried to talk with Mr. Porter, but he ran down the block and began shooting at the officers as he fled, police said.
One of the officers was hit by the gunfire and required hospitalization, police said. The other officer returned fire as the on-foot pursuit continued in Southeast.
The gunman took aim at the additional officers who came as backup, and one of the officers shot the suspect, police said.
Mr. Porter was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The wounded officer, who had just graduated from the police academy last month, was released from the hospital later Friday.
