A graduate student who went missing in Wisconsin last weekend was found dead in the Mississippi River near Brownsville, Minnesota, Wednesday.

People reported Eliotte Heinz, 22, a student at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, missing after she failed to return home from a night out on the town. The La Crosse Police Department said she was last seen walking southbound on the city’s Front Street South at around 3:15 a.m. Sunday.

She had spent time at Bronco’s Bar in La Crosse prior to her disappearance, according to a missing person’s poster shared online by Viterbo University.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota said that around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, a fisherman in Brownsville found her body south of a local marina. Brownsville is 13 miles south of La Crosse.

La Crosse police said they’re still investigating her disappearance and are waiting on an autopsy to figure out how she died.

“This was not the outcome we had hoped for throughout this search,” La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Eliotte’s family, friends and all those who knew Eliotte.”

Viterbo University, a private Catholic school, posted on social media that it “joins the Heinz family, the La Crosse community, and all who knew and loved Eliotte in mourning her tragic passing. We are heartbroken by this loss and extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.”

The university said it will hold a memorial service for Ms. Heinz once students return in the fall.
