A newborn baby girl was saved by a good Samaritan in Honolulu, Hawaii, over the weekend after being left in a trash bin by her mother.
No arrests have been made regarding the incident, but a child abandonment case has been opened, Honolulu police told KHNL-TV.
The rescuer overheard a woman screaming outside at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and looked outside to see what the commotion was.
“Right over here, across the street, I witnessed a homeless lady giving birth to a child so I immediately picked up my phone and called 911,” the good Samaritan, who declined to provide a name, told KHON-TV.
The woman then purportedly walked over to a garbage can and put the infant inside.
“Disbelief really. Just in the moment I was in shock a little bit. Really no words. I was able to just grab it out of the top of the trash and it didn’t look like it was really injured or anything. It was crying when I took it out of the dumpster, which is a good sign,” the man told KHON-TV.
The baby was taken to a local hospital in serious condition, Honolulu EMS officials told KHNL-TV.
