Actor George Clooney’s wife played a crucial role in the decision by the International Criminal Court‘s (ICC) top prosecutor to seek arrest warrants for Israel‘s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on war crimes charges.
The information, reported by the Daily Mail, emerged recently, highlighting attorney Amal Clooney as one of six legal experts who assisted British prosecutor Karim Khan in reaching this significant decision.
The request for warrants, announced Monday, also targets Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders.
A panel of three ICC judges now must decide on Mr. Khan’s request, a process that typically takes a few months.
Mrs. Clooney disclosed that she had been requested to help Mr. Khan evaluate evidence related to purported war crimes in Gaza and Israel four months ago.
In a statement on her foundation’s website, Mrs. Clooney stated: “As a human rights lawyer, I will never accept that one child’s life has less value than another’s. I do not accept that any conflict should be beyond the reach of the law, nor that any perpetrator should be above the law.”
The development follows months of public criticism directed at Mrs. Clooney for her silence on the conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in over 35,000 Palestinian deaths, including many women and children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.
Following the revelation of her involvement, many critics have retracted their harsh comments, taking to social media to express their apologies.
Israel and its allies have strongly rejected the ICC prosecutor’s decision.
An Israeli official condemned the move as a “baseless blood libel” against the country, while President Isaac Herzog and other senior figures described the decision as “outrageous” and unacceptable.
“The ICC prosecutor’s baseless blood libel against Israel has crossed a red line in his lawfare efforts against the lone Jewish state and the only democracy in the Middle East,” an Israeli official stated, as reported by the Financial Times.
