Former Proud Boys national chair Enrique Tarrio was arrested on Capitol Hill just weeks after being released from prison.

U.S. Capitol Police told The Washington Times that Mr. Tarrio was arrested Friday afternoon after officers witnessed him swipe at a counter-protester who put her phone close to his face.

Police said that Mr. Tarrio struck the woman’s phone and arm, and that the woman wished to press charges against him. Mr. Tarrio was arrested and charged with simple assault.

A person found guilty of simple assault could face up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, according to D.C. law.

The incident took place shortly after Mr. Tarrio and other Proud Boys, along with Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes, held a press conference outside of the Capitol where they railed against the U.S. prison system and characterized their prison sentences as the product of “show trials.”

Mr. Tarrio was one of more than 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants granted clemency by President Trump shortly after taking office.

He was one of four members from the far-right group that was found guilty of seditious conspiracy and was sentenced to 22 years in prison, despite not being in Washington when thousands of Mr. Trump’s supporters descended upon the Capitol.
