A former Democratic staffer and Federal Communications Commission employee accused of sexually assaulting two women was released on bond earlier this month.

Court records show Jeffrey Gary, 35, bonded out June 13 after he was charged weeks earlier with attacking two women last month at the Braddock Road and Potomac Yard Metro stations in Alexandria, Virginia.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter said they are fighting to keep Mr. Gary behind bars as his case proceeds.

“The Commonwealth disagrees with the bail decision and is appealing the matter to the Court of Appeals,” Mr. Porter told local outlet ALXnow, who first reported on Mr. Gary’s arrest.

An Alexandria judge allowed Mr. Gary to post bail on the condition he submit to house arrest and wear a GPS ankle monitor. The defendant also has to undergo substance abuse and mental health evaluations.

He is due back in court July 7.

Alexandria police said he was arrested June 1 in connection to the attacks that occurred May 30. The FCC told the Daily Caller that Mr. Gary was fired from his role as assistant division chief after he was taken into custody.

“Upon hearing of this disturbing incident, we took immediate action against this employee,” the FCC said in a statement. “His employment with the agency has been terminated.”

Authorities said Mr. Gary approached a woman from behind while she walked out of the Braddock Road Metro station around 9:40 p.m. on May 30.

The suspect then “grabbed her and wrestled her to the ground” in an attempt to restrain her, police said. The victim fought off her attacker, who was arrested two days later with the help of Fairfax County police.

The other attack took place earlier that evening at Potomac Yard — the two stations are adjacent on the system’s yellow line — but authorities provided no further details.

Mr. Gary is a Georgetown Law graduate who had worked briefly in 2015 for Sen. Maria Cantwell, Washington Democrat, according to Capitol Hill employee database Legistorm. In 2017 and 2018, he worked as a law clerk for Sen. Ron Wyden, Oregon Democrat.
