NextImg:Florida school district stops ‘Witchy Wednesday’ announcements about moon worship after complaints

A Florida school district announced Tuesday it would cease morning announcements that included witchcraft rituals following a complaint from Christian students represented by a religious liberty organization.

A lawyer representing Orange County Public Schools sent a letter to Liberty Counsel about “Witchy Wednesday” where students were subject to a school morning announcement — which began Sept. 10 — explaining to them how to worship the moon and practice other witch behavior.

Liberty Counsel had previously sent a letter to the district demanding an opt-out option for Christian students who oppose listening to the witchcraft-minded morning announcements in violation of their faith.

It also asked that Christian students be able to counter the message in their own announcement so the school would not violate the First Amendment by favoring one viewpoint over another.

The school district’s lawyer, however, said that after reviewing the matter, West Orange High School — where the witchy announcement had taken place — would not continue to occur, recognizing a potential First Amendment conflict.

“We do not want any student, whether Christian or non-Christian, to feel like they are outsiders and not full members of the political community at West Orange High School. As such, we can no longer allow the segment in question to continue,” the letter read.

Liberty Counsel, meanwhile, had previously not identified the school where the witchcraft announcement took place but did say it wanted a response from district officials by Sept. 30.

The “Witchy Wednesday” announcement earlier this month included encouragement for students to worship the moon and write down their intentions while burning the paper over a white candle.

“There is a full moon coming up on September 18th where the energy is at its highest peak. Creating simple things like moon water and releasing rituals are good ways to cleanse and recharge yourself during this period,” the script reads, according to Liberty Counsel’s press release.

“In other news, our first ever ‘Witch Tip Spotlight’ is a spell for enlightenment that I call ‘Light of Insight.’ Its purpose is all about inviting clarity, wisdom, and light into your life. You will need a white candle, paper, pen, and incense. You can burn your incense around your area of practice to clear your surrounding energy for a start,” the script reads.
