Miami prosecutors charged a man Friday accused of attempting to kidnap a boy in broad daylight — only to be thwarted by the boy’s father.
Authorities said they took Nicolas Sternaman, 26, into custody on aggravated child abuse charges after he was accused of snatching a four-year-old boy at a CVS Pharmacy in Miami Beach.
Police said the incident took place just before noon Thursday in the North Beach area when a man who was walking into the store quickly grabbed and picked up a boy as the child was walking out.
Store surveillance video released by police showed the boy’s father leap into action and fight off the abductor.
The boy’s mother can be seen lifting her child up and bringing him back inside the store.
The suspect ditches his jacket while wrestling with the father and then flees the scene.
The suspect was booked into jail shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday.
Local ABC affiliate WPLG reported that Mr. Sternaman was arrested on Jan. 3 for petty theft charges. He was scheduled to go to trial for the charges in April.
