Police in Florida said they arrested and charged a man Wednesday who was accused of starting a shootout that involved officers and the victim’s family.

No one was injured in the shooting, police reported.

The Hardee County Sheriff’s Office said it took Morgan Miguel Garcia, 29, of Zolfo Springs into custody on charges of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, aggravated stalking and multiple other crimes in connection to the gunfight Tuesday night.

Authorities said a deputy was called to a Zolfo Springs home at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday because Mr. Garcia violated a restraining order and armed himself with an AR-15.

The deputy grabbed his department-issued rifle upon arrival and encountered a gun-toting Mr. Garcia in the home’s backyard, police said.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy ordered Mr. Garcia to drop his gun, but the suspect took cover and began firing at the lawman.

Police said the deputy shot back and ordered the victim’s family to take cover inside the home. That’s when the father of the victim joined the gunfight.

“The victim’s father, fearing for his family’s lives, retrieved his 9 mm handgun and returned fire toward Garcia,” the sheriff’s office said. “Garcia was then witnessed firing into the door of the home attempting to gain access to the residence, where the family members were taking cover.”

Mr. Garcia eventually busted out a window in the house and ran away, police said. The deputy lost sight of the suspect and a manhunt ensued.

The sheriff’s office said it received a tip Wednesday that Mr. Garcia was hiding out in an area home. He was arrested without incident at that house.

Zolfo Springs is 70 miles southeast of Tampa.
