A flight instructor died and his student was injured Monday after a plane crash in southern Michigan, authorities said.

The single-engine aircraft crashed around 1:10 p.m. in Bridgewater Township, close to Ann Arbor Municipal Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Pictures of the plane obtained by local media show its registration number as N1039X. It is registered to Silvered Wings LLC in Howell, Michigan, according to its FAA registration.

The plane left the Ann Arbor airport at around 11:32 a.m. headed for the Raymond L. Kussmaul Jr. Memorial Airport in Clinton, Michigan, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

The instructor, a 46-year-old man from Dearborn, Michigan; and the flight student, a 22-year-old man from North Carolina, were the only persons onboard, Michigan State Police posted on X. Authorities did not identify either man.

A witness said the plane crashed in a vacant field.

“It was strange because I didn’t hear a motor, I didn’t hear anything. I’m a veteran, so when I saw the plane, I knew something was off. The plane took a nosedive straight down,” Ken Krause told The Detroit News.

The instructor was declared dead at the scene, Huron Valley Ambulance confirmed to CBS affiliate WWJ-TV. The student was airlifted to a hospital, state police said in a news release.

Authorities did not specify the student’s injuries.
