Federal officials said they have identified the man seen hurling rocks at police vehicles in Paramount over the weekend as part of the Los Angeles area’s riots against immigration authorities.
The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office said it’s looking to arrest Elpidio Reyna, 40, of Compton on charges of assaulting a police officer.
The agency said the suspect is a fugitive after the attack in which a man wearing a motorcycle helmet was seen pelting stones at federal vehicles from just a few feet away.
“Elpidio Reyna can run, but he can’t hide,” U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said Monday. “He threw rocks at federal officers leaving a command post in Paramount on Saturday, a brazen attack caught on film and that could have resulted in deaths.”
Prosecutors said Mr. Reyna faces up to eight years behind bars if convicted. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
More than 70 people have been arrested in the riots that have seen instigators throw Molotov cocktails at police and drive motorcycles into skirmish lines.
Protesters have also shot fireworks and thrown bottles and rocks at officers in riot gear and even blocked off part of U.S. 101 when they stormed the highway over the weekend.
Some agitators ignited self-driving Waymo cars, while others looted businesses once it became dark in LA.
“Let me be clear: ANYONE who vandalized Downtown or looted stores does not care about our immigrant communities. You will be held accountable,” the Office of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass posted Tuesday on X.
President Trump has activated 4,000 National Guard troops and deployed 700 Marines to the city in an attempt to restore order.
Ms. Bass, a Democrat, told KTLA that the federalized soldiers have mostly stood guard outside of federal buildings downtown and have not helped local officials get a handle on the protesters and rioters.
