The Justice Department announced charges Wednesday against a man at a mental health facility in Florida who prosecutors say made illegal threats against President Biden.

Jason Patrick Alday made one of the threats on social media, saying “I’ll kill Joe Biden today,” according to a Secret Service affidavit filed in the case.

Mr. Alday also posted saying Mr. Biden’s health was declining and asking “should I finish him off?”

And after a Secret Service agent visited his home in response to an alert about threats from a mental health facility he posted online calling the agent a racial slur and saying he wanted the agent “dead too.”

The 39-year-old Quincy, Florida, man is accused of posting the threats in late June and early July, with the latest one coming July 11.

That’s two days before a gunman tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump, Mr. Biden’s rival, at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Both Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden have called on Americans to tone down the vitriol and refrain from violence.

The first alert to the Secret Service came on June 25 when an intake coordinator at the Apalachee Center reported that a patient at the mental health facility had made threats while going through the intake.

An agent, along with local police, visited Mr. Alday at his parents’ home on July 1 where he said he didn’t remember the threats but became agitated at the questions, according to the Secret Service.
