Fat Bear Week, a competition held each year by Explore.org and Katmai National Park in Alaska, was postponed after a male bear killed a female bear.
The contest’s bracket was originally slated for release Monday but was pushed to Tuesday. Voting to decide which bulked-up brown bear people like best was to start at noon Eastern time Wednesday.
Bear 402, a mother of at least eight litters, according to an Explore.org breakdown of the attack, was killed by Bear 469 on Monday, Katmai National Park said in a release.
Explore.org operates streaming cameras along the Brooks River within the park and captured the fatal attack. Bear 402 was kept down in the water and ultimately drowned, Explore.org naturalist Mike Fitz explained.
