Rep. Rashida Tlaib held up a paddle that read “Stop sending bombs” when President Biden began to discuss the Israel-Hamas war, underscoring a lingering divide between progressives and the White House on the issue.

Ms. Tlaib, Michigan Democrat, was previously censured by the House for her inflammatory rhetoric against Israel, in which she appeared to defend Hamas and blame the Jewish state for the Oct. 7 attack that killed more than 1,400 citizens.

The Palestinian-American lawmaker, with her peers in the far-left “Squad,” have been highly critical of Mr. Biden about the Israel-Hamas war, arguing that the White House is not doing enough to save Palestinians in Gaza or to engineer a permanent cease-fire in the monthslong conflict.

During his State of the Union address, Mr. Biden pressed lawmakers to pass his foreign aid package that includes humanitarian aid for the war-torn Gaza.

His plea follows a promise to build a port to deliver aid to the region.

“We have a fundamental responsibility to protect the civilians of Gaza,” he said.
