A number of top European leaders took to social media Friday to offer some backup for beleaguered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after his tense, televised clash with President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance over the war with Russia and the road ahead.
Although they were careful not to criticize the Trump administration directly, more than a dozen national leaders and top European Union officials, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen, issued strong statements in support of Ukraine, even as relations with Washington were in crisis.
“Ukraine, you’ll never walk alone,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said in a statement posted on X.
Mr. Macron, speaking to reporters on a visit to Portugal, remarked, “Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the aggressed people. … These are simple things, but they’re good to remember at times like these.”
Mr. Zelenskyy, who left the White House without signing the much-touted minerals and economic development agreement sought by Mr. Trump as the centerpiece of the visit, is scheduled to attend a meeting of European leaders in London on Sunday to update them on his Washington stop.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X Friday night that he had already heard from a number of his European counterparts offering support after the White House meeting. He praised Mr. Zelenskyy for having the “bravery and strength to stand up for what is right.”
The supportive messages, the minister said, prove that “Ukraine is not alone.”
