After a bull escaped from an enclosure along a stretch of Interstate 17 in Arizona Friday, state troopers corralled it and returned it to its enclosure. No one was injured in the incident.

The bull was spotted by Arizona Department of Transportation roadside cameras just before 1 a.m. local time Friday. Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers went down to the stretch of highway in Phoenix to capture the loose animal.

The bull was confronted by flashing lights and sirens, and looked like it might charge the troopers.

“One of our troopers got out of his truck and noticed that the bull lowered its head in a charging manner, so he immediately got back in his vehicle. The bull did not charge him, fortunately,” DPS spokesman Warren Trent told Phoenix radio station KJZZ.

DPS Sgt. Kevin Watt told local CBS affiliate KPHO-TV that once he arrived, the bull “was just standing in the HOV lane staring at me. I had my sirens going, everything I could to scare him off the roadway, but he seemed like he wanted to take me on. He kind of dipped his head and made it seem like he wanted to challenge me.”

The bull ultimately stood down and was returned to its enclosure near the roadway. Troopers repaired the gap that let the bull escape in the first place, according to KPHO.

Law enforcement didn’t say who owns the bull or whether anyone faces charges for the escape.
