The Environmental Protection Agency has leapt to comply with President Trump’s renaming efforts, declaring Wednesday that its Gulf of Mexico program is now officially the Gulf of America division.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin touted the change in a statement celebrating the body of water west of Florida and east of Texas.
“The Gulf of America is a flourishing economic resource critical to our nation’s economy,” Mr. Zeldin said. “We are pleased to recognize it and ready to protect it.”
The change was immediately apparent on the agency’s website, which now touts “EPA’s work in the Gulf of America.”
Mr. Trump ordered the renaming in an Inauguration Day directive.
Mexico has vehemently objected, saying the old name has served for centuries.
EPA’s gulf program was formed in 1988 and is based in Mississippi.
