Singer Elton John’s latest Broadway offering, “Tammy Faye,” based on the life of televangelist Tammy Faye Messner, announced it’s bowing out fast.

The musical saw success in a run in Britain in 2022, with leading lady Katie Brayben winning an Olivier Award, the British equivalent of a Tony, for best actress in a musical. Stateside, the reworked show didn’t land as well, even with Ms. Brayben reprising the title role.

The show opened on Nov. 14 and, on Tuesday, its account on X announced it will close following a performance on Dec. 8.

The show, which was capitalized for $22 million, will have only played 24 previews and 29 full performances in between opening and closing. It was the lowest-grossing show on Broadway last week, with its theater being 37% empty come showtime, according to The New York Times.

The titular protagonist became known in real life as the wife of fellow televangelist Jim Bakker.

Messner, who died in 2007 at age 65, and Bakker, still alive at 84, hosted programming on religious TV until 1987.
