Elon Musk has dumped millions into a slew of competitive House races across the country to bolster Republicans, who have lagged behind Democrats in the financial race this election cycle.
America PAC, the billionaire’s Texas-based super political action committee, has spent $8.2 million in 18 tight House races, according to recent filings with the Federal Election Commission.
Mr. Musk, who is the richest man in the world, has become a vocal ally of former President Donald Trump and is spending millions to boost his campaign.
So far, Mr. Musk’s PAC has spent roughly $80 million on the election, most of which has gone to back Mr. Trump.
He is also working to register voters in swing states and giving $47 to anyone who gets registered voters in the seven battleground states to sign a petition vowing to support the First and Second Amendments.
Though he initially billed his super PAC as a mechanism to elect Mr. Trump that was not intended to be overly partisan, he is now backing Republicans in 11 states, including in key House contests in New York and California.
“I don’t think the Republicans are perfect,” Mr. Musk said in an interview with Tucker Carlson on Monday. “Obviously, right now I [lean] more Republican than Democrat, but it’s not like I think the Republican Party is perfect or without issues, but we’ve got a choice between two candidates, and I think on balance, it’s a no brainer to vote for Trump”
“And if we don’t vote for Trump, I think we are at serious risk of losing our democracy and becoming a one-party state, where there isn’t an election anymore,” he said.
The money, which is being spent on canvassing and digital ads, comes as Democrats have vastly outraised Republicans throughout this election cycle. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has so far raised over $250 million, while the National Republican Congressional Committee has hauled in just over $183 million.
The contest that has received the most money from America PAC, over $950,000, is in New York’s 17th Congressional district, where Rep. Mike Lawler is seeking reelection against Democrat Mondaire Jones.
America PAC has spent over $760,000 in California’s 41st congressional district, where Rep. Ken Calvert, who chairs the Defense Appropriations subcommittee, is locked in a tight race with Democrat Will Rollins.
Another California race rounds out the top three, where Mr. Musk’s PAC doled out $649,000 to back Rep. Michelle Steel in her bid against Democrat Derek Tran for another term in California’s 45th Congressional District.
