An 80-year-old man got stuck on Rome’s Spanish Steps after driving a Mercedes down them early Tuesday.

Rome police didn’t name the driver but said on Facebook that he crashed into the 18th-century steps and got stuck. The man tested negative for alcohol.

The driver said he took the wrong road on his way to work, reported RomaToday.

The police didn’t mention any charges against the driver or any injuries but said firefighters were needed to remove the car.

Fire officials said on X that they began recovery efforts at around 4:30 a.m. and used a crane to lift the Mercedes off the steps.

The driver is facing a fine and will have to pay compensation for damage to the steps, according to RomaToday.
