More than 10,000 cartons of eggs sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature store brand have been recalled by the warehouse chain’s supplier because of the risk of salmonella.
Handsome Brook Farms, which buys eggs from small family-owned farms across 10 East Coast and Midwest states, initiated the voluntary recall after figuring out that eggs not intended for sale were accidentally packaged and sent out to stores. The company is working with the Food and Drug Administration to recall the eggs.
No illnesses connected to the eggs have been reported.
Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and, in rare cases, can get into the bloodstream and cause more serious problems such as arthritis, artery infections and endocarditis, the FDA said Wednesday.
The recalled eggs were sold at 25 Costco stores across Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
About 10,800 cartons, each containing 24 organic eggs, were sold at the stores starting Nov. 22.
The FDA recall notice urged consumers to look for a use-by date of Jan. 5, 2025, and a Julian code of 327, referring to the number of days that have passed in the calendar year prior to packaging. The Costco notice mentioned the same Julian code, but warned consumers to look for a use-by date of Jan. 6.
Recalled cartons can be returned to a Costco store for a full refund.
