A DNA test on the purported remains of U.S. Interstate 75 shooting suspect Joseph Couch produced uncertain results. A new test was to be conducted Friday.

Mr. Couch is accused of opening fire on a stretch of the highway in Kentucky on Sept. 7 and wounding five people.

A body believed to be Mr. Couch was found by police and two YouTubers in a heavily wooded, hilly area north of London, Kentucky, Wednesday. Personal artifacts and a gun found with the body were “consistent” with descriptions of Mr. Couch, Kentucky State Police said.

A soft-tissue DNA test was conducted. Since it was not conclusive, another test using DNA extracted from the body’s bones was scheduled Friday, with results coming out in 24 to 48 hours.

“At this time, we are able to confirm that the autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a wound consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head,” Kentucky’s chief medical examiner, Dr. William Ralston, said in a KSP update Thursday.

The YouTubers, Fred and Sheila McCoy, will receive at least $25,000 in reward money for helping find the body, KSP told the Lexington Herald-Leader.
