Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said Sunday she doesn’t believe Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has an interest in any “real, good faith” negotiations over his country’s war with Russia, now in its third year.
Speaking to “Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Bream, Ms. Gabbard accused Mr. Zelenskyy of directly challenging President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance during a White House visit in which he had hoped to increase the administration’s support for Ukraine.
She said staffers from both sides had several conversations before Friday’s explosive clash in the Oval Office.
“President Zelenskyy’s immediate escalation there was, frankly, quite a surprise,” Ms. Gabbard said. “This has created a huge rift in the relationship.”
She said Mr. Zelenskyy, who left the White House after the failed meeting and flew back to Europe, doesn’t believe he did anything wrong.
“There’s going to have to be a rebuilding of any kind of interest in good faith negotiations, I think, before President Trump is going to be willing to re-engage on this,” Ms. Gabbard said.
Mr. Trump recognizes the urgent need to end the war after three long years and is the only leader capable of accomplishing the goal, she said. But Ms. Gabbard warned of a growing divergence between his position and that of Mr. Zelenskyy and other European leaders.
“President Zelenskyy has different aims in mind,” she said. “He wants to end this war, but he will only accept an end apparently that leads to what he views as Ukraine’s victory, even if it comes at an incredibly high cost of potentially World War III or even a nuclear war.”
