A same-day delivery driver in the Twin Cities area is facing theft charges after being accused of stealing packages.
Suspect Khang Huu Hoang, 25, worked for Target subsidiary Shipt and was the delivery driver for multiple packages originating at a facility for the retail giant in Minneapolis. The parcels were reported missing from July 25 through Sept. 17, according to The Minnesota Star Tribune.
Staff at the apartment building where Mr. Hoang lives informed Target about a large number of trashed empty boxes, each marked with addresses across the Twin Cities area.
Mr. Hoang was seen on camera disposing of Target boxes at least 27 times, according to court documents cited by Minneapolis’ KMSP-TV.
The items matched to the empty boxes were worth over $5,300. Overall, Mr. Hoang was the assigned driver for missing packages worth over $16,500, the TV station reported.
Authorities caught on to the scheme after a Target employee reported a theft in August. Surveillance footage purportedly showed Mr. Hoang snapping a picture of a vacuum cleaner meant for the employee to show it was delivered, then taking the item with him when he left, according to the Star Tribune.
A law enforcement search of Mr. Hoang’s apartment on Oct. 2 turned up TVs, vacuum cleaners and other items worth over $6,000, according to the Star Tribune.
Mr. Hoang, now in custody, is charged with one count of theft by swindling and is due back in court on Oct. 27, according to KMSP.
