A former player for the Old Glory DC pro rugby team was arrested last week, accused of raping a woman in Arlington, Virginia, in June.
Brady Gilliland-Daniel, who played on Old Glory’s back row, faces several charges, including rape, sexual battery, strangulation and sodomy of a helpless victim. He is being held by the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office and withdrew a bond appeal on Wednesday.
Gilliland-Daniel is scheduled to appear before a judge for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 22.
“We are aware of the allegations involving one of our players and take the matter extremely seriously,” Robyn Remick, Old Glory’s general manager of business affairs, said in a statement. “We can confirm that the player is no longer associated with the team.”
The club, which plays its matches at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, ended its Major League Rugby season in June. The team’s games air live on the Monumental Sports Network.
Gilliland-Daniel, 26, wrestled at Arizona State after growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland. He played fullback for the Sun Devils football team before transitioning to rugby. He joined Old Glory in 2022, according to his team profile.
“We are evaluating next steps in accordance with our organizational policies and with respect for the legal process,” Ms. Remick said. “As our understanding is limited to publicly available information and this remains an ongoing legal matter, we will not be making further comment at this time.”
