D.C. police on Tuesday identified the gunman who was killed in a shootout with officers Monday in the lobby of a Northeast apartment building.
Derrick Williams, 45, of Northeast, was killed after wounding three police officers when he opened fire on them at about 4:40 a.m. Monday at the Union Market Apartments in the 300 block of Florida Avenue NE, police said.
Officers were responding to a report of a gunshot in the building when they encountered Williams, who ducked into an elevator in the lobby. Moments later, he returned to the lobby, where the officers tried to place him under arrest.
A struggle ensued, and Williams opened fire on the officers, who returned fire and fatally struck him, police said. Lifesaving efforts failed, and Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
The wounded officers, who were treated at a hospital, will be placed on administrative leave while the Metropolitan Police Department reviews the shooting.
