D.C. police said Wednesday a man accused of murder in a deadly shooting near the waterfront escaped police custody at a city hospital.

Metropolitan Police said Christopher Haynes, 31, fled from officers at the George Washington Hospital shortly before 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The suspect is described as a Black man with shoulder-length dreadlocks. He was last seen wearing a white suit with one red shoe.

Police said he is not handcuffed.

Anyone who spots the suspect is urged to call 911 immediately.

Police said Mr. Haynes was one of the three people arrested overnight and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Tuesday’s fatal shooting at a home in the 200 block of M Street Southwest.

Assistant Chief Carlos Heraud said Tuesday that officers arrived on the scene and found one victim who was mortally wounded and one who needed treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, Chief Heraud said another three victims turned up at a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

He said that it appeared all five of those who were injured by gunfire knew each other “in some way, shape or form.”
