Prince George’s County police said a man accused of carjacking an off-duty police officer in Oxon Hill was taken into custody Friday.
Authorities said Anthony Stewart, 19, of the District, was arrested by Metropolitan Police in connection to Thursday’s carjacking near the Tanger Outlets National Harbor shopping center.
Mr. Stewart and another male suspect, who hasn’t been identified, forced the off-duty Prince George’s County police officer and his family members out of the car just after 5 p.m. Thursday in the 6700 block of Tanger Boulevard, police said.
The off-duty officer responded by unholstering his department-issued firearm and shooting at the two suspects.
No one was injured in the shooting. Authorities said the suspects fled in the officer’s personal vehicle.
Mr. Stewart remains behind bars in the District while he awaits extradition to Prince George’s County. The suspect is facing carjacking, robbery, theft and other charges.
Police data shows that Prince George’s County has seen 501 carjackings in 2023, an 18% increase from 2022.
