The office of Mayor Muriel Bowser is now issuing marriage licenses and certifying officiants in the District, thanks to a new emergency law amid the government shutdown.
The mayor’s office can begin delivering the licenses Tuesday, according to a post on X from Ms. Bowser.
Normally, the clerk of the D.C. Superior Court issues marriage licenses to city residents and authorizes officiants for marriages in the District, but since the court is federally funded, the clerk can’t do so during the shutdown.
As emergency legislation, the law lasts 90 days — until Jan. 7.
Similar legislation was passed during previous government shutdowns, including one in 2018-19, according to WDVM-TV.
