Big-box retailer Costco is now selling platinum bars in an expansion of its precious metals business.
Costco will now sell platinum bars decorated with the Roman goddess of prosperity Lady Fortuna, for $1,089.99 each. The bars are sold in partnership with Pamp, which sells other precious metals and collectibles.
The company’s decision to sell platinum bars comes after Costco’s success with other precious metals like gold and silver.
According to a Costco earnings report, the company sold around $100 million worth of gold bars in the first quarter of 2023. Earlier this year, the company began selling silver coins at $675 each on its website.
Costco customers who shop exclusively in-store may not see the new platinum bars firsthand, as Costco routinely showcases “limited time” offerings on its storefront.
However, platinum might not be the run-away sales success that gold has been. Platinum’s price point has remained relatively stagnant over the last year, while the gold futures have risen by approximately 30% in 2024, making it an attractive investment for some customers.
