A hazmat team was called to the Wake County Board of Elections in North Carolina this week after a mysterious package arrived from Hawaii. It turned out to have cookies inside.
Workers at the election board didn’t know what was in the box when it arrived Tuesday, nor did they recognize the name or address of the sender. So they called first responders.
“We are just on high alert with these things automatically,” Wake County Elections Specialist Danner McCulloh told ABC News.
What hazmat teams and the Raleigh Police Department found in the box following an X-ray was a shipment of pineapple-shaped cookies made by Honolulu Cookie Co., according to The Wall Street Journal.
The sender had heard a radio story about election work in Wake County and decided to send the cookies as a gift along with a written thank-you note, Mr. McCulloh explained.
