A German toddler is gaining international attention for his paintings, which are being sold for up to $7,000.
The talent of Laurent Schwarz — who is just 2 years old — was first noticed during a family vacation last fall when he spent significant time engaged in artistic activities, the New York Post reports.
Upon returning home in Bavaria, his parents, Lisa and Philipp Schwarz, provided Laurent with a studio. They observed in amazement as he covered himself and his canvas with vibrant paintings.
“They’re abstracts, and what’s unusual is how he integrates discernible figures into them, which people often mention to us and which makes them so popular,” the proud mama told The Times of London.
Recognizing their son’s talent, Mrs. Schwarz created an Instagram account, @laurents.art, to share his work. The account quickly attracted more than 29,000 followers by Wednesday, spurred by the appreciation from social media users.
Encouraged by the online response, Mrs. Schwarz began selling Laurent’s artwork online. His pieces were featured at Munich’s largest art fair, ARTMUC, held in April, where they were purchased by buyers from around the world.
Discussions are underway for a gallery in New York City to exhibit his works, potentially making it Laurent’s next major showcase.
The earnings from Laurent’s paintings are in a bank account that he won’t be able to access until he turns 18.
Most of his artwork has been sold, highlighting the high demand for his creations.
“It’s totally up to him when and what he paints,” Mrs. Schwarz said. “Sometimes he doesn’t feel like painting and doesn’t set foot in his studio for three or four weeks, but then suddenly it grabs him and he says, ‘Mama, painting.’”
