A Lego display at an arcade in Peabody, Massachusetts, collapsed Tuesday, injuring 10 people, eight of whom went to the hospital.
The display at In The Game in Peabody involved balloons being released from netting as part of a New Year’s Eve event, “Noon Year’s Eve.” One end of the netting was attached to an arcade game machine made out of Lego positioned above the lobby, as seen in a video of the display posted by the arcade Monday on Facebook Monday.
The Peabody Fire Department told Boston CBS affiliate WBZ-TV that, as staff struggled to open the netting and release the balloons, a strong tug sent the Lego structure toppling about 12 feet down. Six children and four adults were hurt, suffering minor scrapes and cuts.
Video posted by local photographer Amanda Stanley on Facebook shows the balloons dropping and the Lego structure flipping over and falling onto the crowd.
Of those, eight were sent to local hospitals, the Peabody Police Department posted on Facebook, while two others refused treatment.
An attendee at In The Game’s event described the chaos.
“Large LEGO pieces were everywhere, kids were crying, there were tons of people all in the office some with ice packs over their heads and people allowing their children to steal the Lego pieces like souvenirs. It was pure chaos,” mother Lawren Turco told WBZ-TV.
