The Coast Guard rescued two people who were stranded on an ice floe about a mile from the shoreline in Michigan, officials said.

Coast Guard crews from Station Saginaw River and Air Station Detroit responded to the distress call on Wednesday in Saginaw Bay, part of Lake Huron. Officials said local law enforcement and fire departments also joined the rescue mission.

The ice rescue team from Coast Guard Station Saginaw River was able to reach both victims and return them safely to shore. There were no reported injuries.

“As temperatures drop and winter activities like ice fishing and snowmobiling draw people to frozen lakes and rivers, understanding the dangers of ice is critical to prevent accidents,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer James Hassinger, who commands Coast Guard Station Saginaw River.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew based in Detroit searched the area and found no other people stranded on the ice floe, officials said.
