CNN on Thursday said it will lay off 210 staff members, constituting a 6% reduction in staff as the company continues to change its business.
CNN CEO Mark Thompson wrote in an internal memo that while the layoffs are painful, they’re necessary for the network to accomplish its goals.
“I know that whatever the total number of job losses, the impact on the individuals involved can be immense,” Mr. Thompson wrote. “The process of change is essential if we’re to thrive in the future, but I both acknowledge and regret its very real human consequences.”
CNN declined to say what departments will be most affected by the layoffs and didn’t confirm any changes to its primetime lineup.
However, Mr. Thompson did note that CNN is developing a new way for customers to stream its content beyond what’s available on CNN Max. It’s unclear how the new venture will differ from CNN+, the company’s aborted streaming service it launched in 2022.
CNN also announced it will spend heavily on digital content, with Mr. Thompson promising a $70 million investment. This will translate into around 100 new jobs, mostly focused on generating digital “lifestyle” journalism for CNN’s website.
The layoffs and incoming digital investment come as CNN tries to revitalize its business by shifting toward digital subscription products. In October, the network launched a paywall for some of its more dedicated online readers, charging $3.99 a month.
