The Chinese government has allowed an Atlanta-based Wells Fargo managing director to leave the country after previously holding her under an exit ban.
Chenyue Mao, a U.S. national who was born in Shanghai, was stopped from leaving China in July. Ms. Mao has now left China following months of negotiations between U.S. and Chinese officials, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
“China upholds the rule of law and handles the related criminal case and entry and exit affairs in accordance with the law,” said Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson at China’s embassy in the U.S., according to the Wall Street Journal.
The spokesperson did not offer any details about the criminal case or why Ms. Mao was involved. As part of her work at Wells Fargo, Ms. Mao worked with industry groups and Chinese companies on trade financing and international factoring, according to the Journal.
Another American, an employee at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office visiting China in a personal capacity, was put under an exit ban in April and remains there.
A State Department spokesperson said “we are tracking this case very closely and are engaged with Chinese officials to resolve the situation as quickly as possible,” according to the Financial Times.
